Hofstra University is proud to sponsor Long Island History Day (LIHD), a yearlong, research-based educational program that encourages middle school and high school students to explore local, state, national, and world history. The program, highly regarded by Long Island public and private schools alike, culminates in a regional competition held annually here at Hofstra.  Students from across Long Island will select a historical topic that relates to the annual theme, and conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums and oral history interviews.  The students analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about their topics’ significance in history, and create final projects in one of five different categories: Historical Paper, Documentary, Performance, Website or tabletop Exhibit.  The students then present their final projects at the LIHD Competition at Hofstra, where each student (or group of students) will be evaluated, based on specific criteria, by judges comprised of professional historians and educators.

On March 29, 2020, over 700 enthusiastic middle school and high school students will come to Hofstra with hopes to achieve top scores at LIHD in order to be chosen as one of 54 winning project entries to advance to the New York State History Day competition which will be held on April 27, 2020 in Cooperstown, New York.  Winners from the state competition will be eligible to represent New York at the National History Day competition in College Park, Maryland which will be held June 14 – 18, 2020.

All Exhibits will be open to public viewing from 3 - 4 pm on March 29th in the Multi Purpose Room and Cafeteria in the Student Center.
